CHAPTER 1
JOSHUA, having died, the children of Israel inquired of the Self-existent, “Who is to take the lead in the attack against the Canaanites?”
The Self-existent said, “Judah is to take the lead: I have delivered the
people ofû the land to him.”
Judah said to his brother, Simeon, “Come with me to my allotment, and both of us will fight against the Canaanites. I will also go with you to your allotment.” Simeon
consented
and went with him.
When Judah
and Simeonû attacked, the Self-existent [the Holy Spirit] handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them: They struck down ten thousand men in Bezek.
As they were striking down the Canaanites and Perizzites, they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought him.
When Adoni-bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off, used to pick up scraps
under my table. God has repaid me for my deed.” They brought him to
the city of the Peaceful [the Self-existent, the Holy Spirit] – Jerusalem - and he died there.
The men of Judah fought against the city of the Peaceful [the Self-existent, the Holy Spirit] - Jerusalem - and captured it. They killed the people there and set the place on fire.
Afterward, the men of Judah marched down to fight against the Canaanites who were living in the highlands, the south [present-day Judah] and the lowlands.
Judah also marched against the Canaanites who were living in Hebron (Hebron was formerly “Kiriath-arba”). They struck down Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.
From there, they marched against the residents of Debir (Debir was formerly “Kiriath-sepher”),
Caleb said, “Whoever strikes down and captures Kiriath-sepher, I will give my daughter, Achsah, to him as a wife.”
Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s youngest brother, captured it, and Caleb gave his daughter, Achsah, to him as wife.
When she arrived, she persuaded Othniel to [let herû ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What do you want?”
She answered him, “Give me a gift. Since you have given me land in the south, give me springs of water also.” So, Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
The descendants of the Kenites, Moses’ father-in-law, had gone up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the wilderness, by Judah, which was in the south of Arad. They had been living among the people.
Judah went with his brother, Simeon, struck the Canaanites who were living in Zephath and completely destroyed the town. So, they named the town, Hormah.
The Self-existent was with Judah, therefore, Judah also captured Gaza and her territory; Ashkelon and her territory; and Ekron and her territory,
dispossessing the inhabitants of the highlands. However, they could not dispossess the inhabitants of the lowlands; they had chariots.
As Moses promised, they gave Hebron to Caleb, and Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak from there.
The children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites – the inhabitants of the city of the Peaceful [the Self-existent, the Holy Spirit] - Jerusalem – either. So, the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in the city of the Peaceful [the Self-existent, the Holy Spirit] - Jerusalem - up to this day of writing
.
However, the house of Joseph staged an attack against aBethel and the Self-existent was with them.
They sent spies to Bethel (formerly Luz),
and the spies, seeing a man coming out of the town, said to him, “Please, show us how to get into the town and we will treat you well.”
He showed them the way to the town and they killed
the people ofû the town with sword.
As covenanted
, they released the man and his entire family.
Then the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a town, and called it Luz – the name it is called up to this day
of writing
.
Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-she-an and her villages, Tanach and her villages, Dor and her villages, Iblean and her villages, and Megiddo and her villages. Those Canaanites were hell-bent on staying in the land.
When Israel became courageous2388, they made them to serve as forced laborers rather than driving them out.
And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to atribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
Zebulum did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron and Nahahol either; these Canaanites remained among them, however, as forced laborers.
Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Accor, Zidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik and Rehob either;
they settled3427 among the Canaanites who had been dwelling in the land rather than driving them out.
Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemash and Beth-anath either; they settled3407 among the Canaanites who had been dwelling in the land, however, the inhabitants became forced laborers.
The Amorites were undaunted; they held the Danites back from getting to the district – they held them up on the highland.
They even remained in the countries - Heres Aijalon and Shaalbim. Albeit, the tribe of Joseph eventually got the upper hand, so they turned them to forced laborers.
The Amorites used to occupy the territory from the Ascent of Akrabbim – from Sela onward.
