When Judah leftBracket symboland SimeonrightBracket symbol attacked, the Self-existent, the Holy Spirit, handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them: They struck down ten thousand men in Bezek.

5

As they were striking down the Canaanites and Perizzites, they found the ruler of Bezek in Bezek and fought him.

6

When the ruler of Bezek fled, they pursued him, seized him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

7

The ruler of Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off, used to pick upleftBracket symbolscrapsrightBracket symbolunder my table. God has repaid me for my deed.” They brought him to the city of the Peaceful One – Jerusalem - and he died there.

8

The men of Judah fought against hand symbolthe city of the Peaceful One - Jerusalem - and captured it. They killed the people there and set the place on fire.

9

Afterward, the men of Judah marched down to fight against the Canaanites who were living in the highlands, the south [present-day Judah] and the lowlands.

10

Judah also marched against the Canaanites who were living in Hebron (Hebron was formerly “Kiriath-arba”). They struck down Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.

11

From there, they marched against the residents of Debir (Debir was formerly “Kiriath-sepher”),

12

hand symbolCaleb said, “Whoever strikes down and captures Kiriath-sepher, I will give my daughter, Achsah, to him as a wife.”

13

Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s youngest brother, captured it, and Caleb gave his daughter, Achsah, to him as wife.

14

When she arrived, she persuaded Othniel toleftBracket symbollet herrightBracket symbol  ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What do you want?”

15

She answered him, “Give me a gift. Since you have given me land in the south, give me springs of water also.” So, Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.

16

The descendants of the Kenites, Moses’ father-in-law, had gone up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the wilderness, by Judah, which was in the south of Arad. They had been living among the people.

17

Judah went with his brother, Simeon, struck the Canaanites who were living in Zephath and completely destroyed the town. So, they named the town, Hormah.

18

The Self-existent was with Judah, therefore, Judah also captured Gaza and her territory; Ashkelon and her territory; and Ekron and her territory,

19

dispossessing the inhabitants of the highlands. However, they could not dispossess the inhabitants of the lowlands; they had chariots.

20

As Moses promised, they gave Hebron to Caleb, and Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak from there.

21

27

Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-she-an and her villages, Tanach and her villages, Dor and her villages, Ibleam and her villages, and Megiddo and her villages. Those Canaanites were hell-bent on staying in the land.

28

When Israel became courageous, they made them to serve as forced laborers rather than driving them out.

29

Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites at Gezer either; the Canaanites remained among them in Gezer.

30

Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron and Nahahol either; these Canaanites remained among them, however, as forced laborers.

31

Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Accor, Zidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik and Rehob either;

32

they settled among the Canaanites who had been dwelling in the land rather than driving them out.

33

Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath either; they settled among the Canaanites who had been dwelling in the land, however, the inhabitants became forced laborers.

34

The Amorites were undaunted; they held the Danites back from getting to the district – they held them up on the highland.

35

They even remained in the countries - Heres Aijalon and Shaalbim. Albeit, the tribe of Joseph eventually got the upper hand, so they turned them to forced laborers.

36

The Amorites used to occupy the territory from the Ascent of Akrabbim – from Sela onward.
