CHAPTER 1
The message that the Self-existent [the Holy Spirit] gave to Joel son of Pethuel
HEAR this, old men; give ear, all inhabitants of this land. Has this ever happened in your time or even in the times of your fathers?
Tell your children about it and let your children tell their children, and their children to the next generation.
Locust has eaten what palmerworm remained; cankerworm has eaten what locust remained; and caterpillar has eaten what cankerworm remained.
Wake up, drunkards, and weep – howl, drinkers of wine – because new wine is taken away from your mouth:
A nation has come to My land, a nation whose army cannot be numbered, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion and having cheek teeth of a lioness.
She has laid waste My vine and barked My fig tree, she has made it bare and cast it away; its branches are made white.
Bewail like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the
loss of the
husband of her youth [her first husband].
Grain offering and drink offering are taken away from the palace of the Self-existent; the priests, ministers of the Self-existent, lament.
The field is destroyed, farmers are lamenting; new wine is dried up and olive oil has dwindled.
Be ashamed, farmers; howl, labourers; the harvest of the field – the wheat and the barley – is destroyed.
The tree has dried up and the fig tree is sick; pomegranate tree, palm tree and apple tree – all the trees of the field – are withered: Joy has disappeared from the sons of men.
Put on
sackcloth
and wail, priests: Howl, ministers of the altar: Come, lie down all night in sackcloth, ministers of My God [the Self-existent], because grain and drink offerings are kept back from the house of your God [the Self-existent].
Proclaim a fast – call a solemn assembly: Gather the elders, call the inhabitants of the land to the palace of the Self-existent, your God, and cry to the Self-existent.
Say, “Alas! The day, the day of the Self-existent [the Holy Spirit], is close by, it is going to come as a spoiler from the Almighty [the Self-existent].
Hasn’t food been taken away before our very eyes – joy and gladness from the house of our God [the Self-existent - the Holy Spirit]?
The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are lying desolate and the barns are broken down because the corn is withered.
See how the beasts groan! Herds of cattle are perplexed because they have no pasture; in fact, flocks of sheep are made desolate.
The Self-existent, our cry is to you: Fire has devoured the pastures of the
grazing
field and flame has burnt all the trees of the field.
Beasts of the field are crying also to you: Rivers of waters have dried up and fire has consumed the pastures of the
grazing
field.”
