CHAPTER 1
The judgment of Nineveh: The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite
God [the Self-existent] is jealous and He does take vengeance; the Self-existent does take vengeance and
it can be
furious: The Self-existent will take vengeance on His adversaries – He reserves
His wrath
for His enemies.
Though
the Self-existent is patient, His power is great: He will not at all acquit evildoers: The Self-existent walks on the whirlwind and on the storm, the clouds are the dust of His feet.
He rebukes the sea [nation] and makes it dry – all the rivers dry up: Bashan - Carmel – the flower [soul] of Lebanon [a woodland north of Israel] - withers.
At His presence, the mountains quake, the hills melt and the earth [the world and all who dwell there] is burnt.
Who can withstand His indignation? Who can stand the fierceness of His anger? When
His fury is poured out like fire, the rocks are shattered.
The Self-existent is good – a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who trust in Him.
With darkness He shall pursue His enemies and with an overrunning flood He shall completely destroy their place.
Assyria
what are you devising against the Self-existent? He will completely destroy you. (This adversary will not rise up again!
While they are conspiring and drinking themselves to stupor, they shall be devoured as a thoroughly dry stubble.)
A wicked strategist has come out from among you, imagining evil against the Self-existent.
This is what the Self-existent says, “Though they are well prepared and also many, they shall be cut down when He [the Self-existent - the Holy Spirit] shall pass throughthem
.
But you
,” the Self-existent says, “Though I [the Self-existent] have afflicted you, I will no more afflict you:
I will soon break his yoke from you and burst your bonds to pieces.”
Also, Assyria, the Self-existent has issued a command concerning you, “Your fame shall no more be spread
abroad
; I [the Self-existent] will destroy graven and molten images out of the shrines of your gods. I will dig your grave; you are accursed.”
See in the regions, the bringers of good tidings – the publishers of prosperity – coming,
saying to Judah [the southern kingdom], “Go ahead to keep your solemn feasts and perform your vows, because that wicked one shall no more pass through you; he has been utterly destroyed!”
