CHAPTER 1
the Self-existent [the Holy Spirit] spoke to Moses in the meeting tent [the sacred place] in the wilderness, by Sinai, on the first
dayû of the second month of the second year after Israel’s departure from the land of Egypt:
“Take a census of the entire multitude5712 by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of every male one by one.
You and Aaron are to register those who are twenty years old or more, battalion by battalion6635 – everyone eligible for the army.
A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one, the head of his ancestral house.
These are the names of the men who are to assist you: Elizur son of Shedeur, from Reuben;
Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai, from Simeon;
Nahshon son of Amminadab, from Judah;
Nethanel son of Zuar, from Issachar;
Eliab son of Helon, from Zebulun.
From the sons of Joseph: Elishama son of Ammihud, from Ephraim; Gamaliel son of Pedahzur, from Manasseh;
Abidan son of Gideoni, from Benjamin;
Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai, from Dan;
Pagiel son of Ochran, from Asher;
Eliasaph son of Deuel, from Gad;
Ahira son of Enan, from Naphtali.”
These are the men called forth7121 from the entire multitude; they are leaders of their ancestral tribes, heads of Israel’s clans.
So, Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named,
and they assembled the entire multitude on the first day of the second month. They recorded their ancestry by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting one by one, the names of those who were twenty years old or more,
just as the Self-existent [the Holy Spirit] commanded Moses. He registered them in the wilderness, by Sinai:
The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting one by one the names of every male who was twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Reuben numbered forty-six thousand, five hundred.
The descendants of Simeon: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, those registered, counting one by one, the names of every male who was twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Simeon numbered fifty-nine thousand, three hundred.
The descendants of Gad: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Gad numbered forty-five thousand, six hundred and fifty.
The descendants of Judah: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Judah numbered seventy-four thousand, six hundred.
The descendants of Issachar: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Issachar numbered fifty-four thousand, four hundred.
The descendants of Zebulun: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Zebulun numbered fifty-seven thousand, four hundred.
The descendants of Joseph by Ephraim: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Ephraim numbered forty thousand, five hundred.
The descendants of Joseph by Manasseh: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Manasseh numbered thirty-two thousand, two hundred.
The descendants of Benjamin: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army
those registered for the tribe of Benjamin numbered thirty-five thousand, four hundred.
The descendants of Dan: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Dan numbered sixty-two thousand, seven hundred.
The descendants of Asher: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Asher numbered forty-one thousand, five hundred.
The descendants of Naphtali: According to their family records by their clans and their ancestral houses, counting the names of those who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for the army,
those registered for the tribe of Naphtali numbered fifty-three thousand, four hundred.
These were the men Moses and Aaron registered, with
the assistance of
the twelve leaders of Israel, each representing his ancestral house.
So, all the Israelites who were twenty years old or more, everyone eligible for Israel’s army, were registered by their ancestral houses.
All those registered numbered six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty.
But the Levites were not registered with them by their ancestral tribe.
The Self-existent [the Holy Spirit] had told Moses:
“Do not register or take a census of the tribe of Levi with the
other
children of Israel.
Appoint the Levites over the tent of the testimony [the oracle – the most sacred place], all its furnishings, and everything in it. They are to transport the holy dwelling [the sanctuary – the sacred tent] and all its articles, take care of the holy dwelling [the sanctuary – the sacred tent], and camp around it.
Whenever it is to be moved frontwards, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to be pitched, the Levites are to set it up. Any outsider who comes near it must be put to death.
The children of Israel are to camp by battalion, each man with his own group and under his banner.
The Levites are to camp around the tent of testimony [the oracle – the most sacred place] and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the entire multitude; they are to watch over the tent of testimony [the oracle – the most sacred place].”
The children of Israel did everything just as the Self-existent,
the Holy Spirit
, had commanded Moses.
