CHAPTER 1
The word of the Self-existent which came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah
I [the Self-existent - the Holy Spirit], the Oracle of the Self-existent, am determined to utterly empty the land [Assyria] of living things - humans, beasts, fowls, fishes - and the idols of that ungodly one.
I am also determined to deal with Judah and all the habitations of Jerusalem; I will rid this place of Baal, the name of Cheramins with the priests,
all who worship demons on house tops, all who worship, and take oath by, the Self-existent, and by Malcham at the same time,
all who have entirely turned their back against the Self-existent, and all who have never sought the assistance of the Self-existent or worshiped Him.
Keep quiet in front of the Sovereign God [the Self-existent]; the day of the feast
of the Self-existent is at hand: He has prepared a feast and invited His guests.
In the day of the feast of the Self-existent, I, the Self-existent [the Holy Spirit], will punish rulers, the kings’ children, and as many as wear adulterous clothings.
At the same time, I will punish all who jump over the window, who fill their masters’ houses with unjust gain and deception.
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that there shall be the noise of a cry from the afish gate, and an howling from the bsecond, and a great crashing from the hills.
Howl, inhabitants of Maktesh [a district/town in or near the habitation of prosperity - Jerusalem] because all merchants have been decimated; all silver marketers have been eliminated.
That time, I, the Self-existent [the Holy Spirit], will search the habitation of prosperity - Jerusalem - with candles and punish those men who are complacent, saying in their hearts, “The Self-existent will not do anything – good or bad.”
Their goods will be plundered and their houses demolished. They will build houses but not live in them; and they will plant vineyards but not drink the wine.
The great day of the feast of the Self-existent is
near,
it is
near, and running fast, with the thundering of the Self-existent:
even
warriors shall cry bitterly.
That day is a day of anger, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,
and a day of trumpet and alarm against fortified cities and high towers.
I, the Self-existent [the Holy Spirit], will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men because they have sinned against the Self-existent. Also, their blood shall be poured out as dust and their flesh as dung.
Their silver and gold shall not be able to rescue them in the day of the anger of the Self-existent; the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of His jealousy: He shall make a speedy riddance of all those who dwell in the land.
